 \nIn der von Bergen umgebenen\, kleinen Stadt Tepoztlán in Mexiko wächst
  Karla auf. Der Dokumentarfilm begleitet sie über acht Jahre hinweg\, vom
  Kindsein in die Jugendzeit\, von ersten Fragen bis zu einem klaren Gefüh
 l für sich selbst. Karla ist trans*\, und der Film zeigt\, wie Identität
  nicht plötzlich »da« ist\, sondern sich entfaltet\, etwa in Gespräche
 n mit Freund*innen\, durch Blicke von Außenstehenden\, in Kleidung und Ma
 ke-Up\, beim Sport mit anderen Mädchen. Während Karla ihre Verwandlung m
 eistert\, fügt Kani Lapuerta dokumentarisches Bildmaterial\, Social-Media
 -Videos von Karla sowie inszenierte und fantastisch-überspitzte Sequenzen
  zu einem heiteren Film zusammen\, in dem Protagonist*in und Regisseur sel
 bstbewusst die Erfahrungen einer trans* Jugend in einer ländlichen Region
  reflektieren. Gerade weil ihre Beziehung zueinander selbstreflexiver Teil
  des Films ist\, wirkt Niñxs als gemeinsames Empowerment-Projekt. Der Com
 ing-of-Age-Film ist farbenfroh\, verspielt\, politisch\, witzig und beleuc
 htet die queere Lebensrealität mit intimer Nähe. Er verdeutlicht\, wie w
 ichtig die selbstbestimmte Repräsentation von trans* Realitäten im Film 
 ist\, und setzt den Fokus auf Lebensfreude und Queer Joy\, die sich in Kar
 las Leben nicht zuletzt durch die Unterstützung von Freund*innen und Fami
 lie entfaltet – ohne dabei zu verschweigen\, dass Karlas Werdegang auch 
 Herausforderungen mit sich bringt und Resilienz erfordert. Ein einfühlsam

 unity feiert.\n\nKarla grows up in the small mountain town of Tepoztlán i
 n Mexico. The documentary follows her over a period of eight years\, from 
 childhood into adolescence\, from the first tentative questions to the mom
 ent she understands exactly who she is. Karla is trans\, and the film show
 s how identity doesn’t suddenly »appear«\, but evolves gradually – i
 n conversations with friends\, through the gazes of strangers\, in clothin
 g and make-up\, playing sports with other girls. As Karla navigates her tr
 ansformation\, Kani Lapuerta weaves together documentary footage\, Karla
 ’s social media videos and enacted\, fantastically exaggerated sequences
  into a light-hearted film in which protagonist and director reflect candi
 dly on the experiences of trans adolescents growing up in a rural region. 
 Their relationship to one another\, embedded in the film narrative\, turns
  Niñxs into a shared empowerment project. This coming-of-age film is colo
 urful\, playful\, political and funny\, portraying queer reality with inti
 mate closeness. It emphasises the importance of trans people representing 
 their own trans realities on screen and celebrates vitality and queer joy 
 – made possible in Karla’s life not least through the support of frien
 ds and family – without losing sight of the challenges involved and the 
 strength that it requires. A deeply empathetic portrait that inspires cour
