„The Empty Grave“ is a documentary that confronts the viewer with the enduring legacy of colonialism, a subject that remains fraught with emotion, controversy, and an urgent need for resolution. Directed by Agnes Lisa Wegner and Cece Mlay, this poignant narrative follows the Mbano and Kaaya families in Tanzania as they seek to repatriate the remains of their ancestors taken to Germany and the United States, respectively, for „racial science“ research during the colonial era. The personal stories of these families are set against the backdrop of tens of thousands of human remains still kept in German museums and universities, a backdrop of historical trauma and the contemporary struggle for justice and identity

Das leere Grab“ ist ein Dokumentarfilm, der den Zuschauer mit dem anhaltenden Erbe des Kolonialismus konfrontiert – einem Thema, das nach wie vor emotional, kontrovers und dringend einer Lösung bedarf. Unter der Regie von Agnes Lisa Wegner und Cece Mlay folgt diese ergreifende Erzählung den Familien Mbano und Kaaya in Tansania bei ihrem Versuch, die sterblichen Überreste ihrer Vorfahren, die während der Kolonialzeit für rassenwissenschaftliche Forschung nach Deutschland bzw. in die USA gebracht wurden, zu repatriieren. Die persönlichen Geschichten dieser Familien spielen vor dem Hintergrund Zehntausender menschlicher Überreste, die noch immer in deutschen Museen und Universitäten aufbewahrt werden, vor dem Hintergrund historischer Traumata und des gegenwärtigen Kampfes um Gerechtigkeit und Identität.

Das Geld geht an Menschen mit Behördengeldstress im Kontext von Bleiberechtsaktivismus.
